Keep three document moments separate

Exam booking, test day, and a family reunion visa file are different stages. A document that helps you register is not automatically sufficient for the examination, and a course completion record is not the same as an official language certificate.

The responsible German mission controls the current visa-file checklist, including any original, copy, translation, or additional-document instruction. Before booking

Confirm your legal name exactly as shown on the identity document you will use, the accepted passport or ID type, a working email and phone number, payment method, and the booking confirmation process. The centre’s current booking instructions decide which documents or records it needs for registration.

Match the correct exam to your plan, then save the confirmation email and the centre’s cancellation or rescheduling policy. Ask the centre before paying if the name in your booking will not match your passport.

Before test day

Check the centre’s message again. You may need the original accepted ID or passport, your booking confirmation, and any centre-specific instruction. Confirm arrival time, location, and what items are allowed or prohibited.

Do not assume a photocopy will replace the original ID, or that a rule at another centre applies to yours. The local centre controls its own check-in instructions.

Before the visa appointment

Keep the original certificate and a clear copy together. Check the certificate name against the applicant’s identity details, and note its examination date and issuing institution.

Before submitting anything, check whether the responsible German mission accepts that certificate for your specific family reunion case and whether its current checklist asks for originals, copies, translations, or additional documents. Requirements can differ by location and individual circumstances.

Keep a private document record

Keep the official booking email, centre instructions, certificate details, and official mission checklist together in a private folder. Record where each requirement came from and when you checked it.

Do not send passport images, certificate scans, or booking codes to an unverified agent or group chat just to ask a general question. Ask the official centre or mission through its published contact route when a document rule is unclear.
